School guidance programs have changed a lot over the past few years. School counselors are no longer educators who just schedule students for classes and are available in the midst of major crisis, but are now a part of a more inclusive, highly-specialized program. School counselors provide support to regular classroom instruction by teaching individual, small group, and classroom lessons on the topics of personal/social, academic, and career development. They serve as advocates for children, a partner and collaborative resource for staff members, parents, and community agencies, and work to provide comprehensive guidance and counseling services grounded in the principals of human growth and development.
Norman C. Geysbers and associates at the University of Missouri worked to develop a Comprehensive Guidance Program Manual which has been adopted by schools throughout the country, including schools in the state of Missouri. The Comprehensive Guidance Program Manual is designed to help school districts and counselors develop K-12 guidance programs which are both systematic and comprehensive, spanning across student competencies and educational content.
The program manual includes curriculum, competencies, content crosswalks, grade level expectations, program evaluations, recommended distribution of counselor's time across grade spans, sample guidance lessons, and much more. The Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program Manual can be viewed in it's entirety by visiting the Missouri Center for Career Education at http://www.mcce.org.
To evaluate the Guidance Program and to determine student needs, every three years a Needs Survey is made available to students, staff, and parents for consideration in planning for the needs of students. The needs assessment will be posted at a later date.
